How to get through a divorce during deployment

Being in the military is an incredible responsibility that can both bring pride to your family but also a high degree of pressure. It is not surprising that because of this, many marriages that involve a military spouse end in divorce. The process of divorce, especially when one of the spouses is currently engaged in active deployment, can be a very stressful and difficult to navigate one. However, it is possible to get through a military divorce during active deployment if you follow some simple steps.

Compile all the paperwork

If you want to get a good divorce settlement for both you and your children, a general rule is that you can never have more than enough paperwork. It will help to both explain your financial situation, and can serve as a case for child custody. A simple bank statement can go a long way to explain your daily activities when it comes to taking care of the kids.

Take advantage of free resources

It is common for military spouses to want to engage in counseling when they start the process of divorce. There are free military counseling programs available to military personnel, and they can help you with the emotional trauma that you may feel burdened by, but also practical next steps to help you move forward with your life.

Take action

Being in the military can make it more tempting to be complacent and delay action when it comes to taking a divorce. But for your own interests, it's important to initiate a military divorce when you feel that it's the right time.
